Silver Fern Visa provides new opportunities for 20 to 35 year olds
22/03/10

The New Zealand Government’s new “Silver Fern” Visa comes into operation in April 2010, with the aim of improving the flow of young skilled people into New Zealand.

There will be a quota of 300 places each year, so interested applicants are urged to apply as soon as possible.

The main advantage of this new Visa is that holders will have 9 months to look for a job (under the Skilled Migrant Category), and on finding one will then be able to start work right away. They won’t have to apply for a Work Permit, which usually involves their new employer completing paperwork and thus can be time-consuming. Silver Fern Visa holders will be able to work for a further 2 years beyond their initial 9 months.

Eligibility Criteria – all applicants must;-

  • apply using the online application (and payment) system
  • be outside of New Zealand
  • be aged between 20 and 35
  • hold a recognised qualification which is either a: bachelor degree or higher, or trade qualification and a minimum of two years’ work experience in that trade,
  • meet the English language requirement set out in the Skilled Migrant Category
  • have enough funds to support themselves during their stay.
